My name is Jason and I just look damn good in orange. Currently, I live in Boston and I do freelance graphic design. My artistic abilities and familiarity with graphics software helped lead me into making these carvings. I had read an article that helped explain the basics of how to create patterns from photos and I thought I could improve upon it and so I set out to give it a try.
The first one I made was a relatively simple self-portrait. I honestly didn't know what to expect from it. In fact, when I was halfway through I almost scrapped the whole thing cause I just didn't expect it to look right. The thing about these carvings is that, until they're lit up, they can look just plain strange. So I put a light inside to see how it might appear when finished and I was pretty surprised and thought "Whoa! This might actually work!" I finished that pumpkin some hours later and from then on I was hooked.
I began expirimenting with my techniques and seeing how far I could push the boundaries. The more people I showed my carvings too, the more times I heard someone say "You should sell these!" There's only so many times you can hear that before you believe it and that's what prompted me to start up this site and make my services available for hire.
Eventually, I discovered the artificial pumpkins offered by Funkins and found them to be a welcome alternative to the real version. For the past couple of years, I have also used watermelons as my media during the summer months.
